Introducing "Designing Women," a weekly interview with women on the forefront of design, creativity and all things beautiful.
This week I am proud to feature a talented calligrapher, and good friend, Justine Ma. If you have been in the store, you may have noticed her beautiful prints, as well as her brilliant work on our chalkboard door.
Without further ado, let's meet Justine!
Your work seems so whimsical, what inspires you?
The idea to create and make things that make people smile definitely makes my job easier. Also, Instagram, I love seeing what other letterers/calligraphers are up to!
How long have you been at this?
How did you get started?
One of my part Art Directors lent me her calligraphy set to calligraph some Valentine cards for an internal agency promotion. I had no clue what I was doing, but we got it done and my love of lettering was born.
Describe your personal style in three words.
Quirky, handmade and loving.
If you had an unlimited budget what would you buy for your home?
A white kitchen with granite countertops!
Favourite Canadian artist?
I've recently come across Justina Smith, who creates the most amazing mixed media paintings - and she's local!
Favourite city to visit?
Christchurch, New Zealand
What do you love about living in Edmonton?
The people! We have a great collection of artists and makers who are incredible and passionate.
If you could live anywhere else, where would you live?
I'm not sure I would move from Edmonton, but in another life I think Paris would have my heart.
What's your favourite dessert?
What's the best way to spend $100?
On art supplies - in particular: fresh fine point black pens in every thickness.
Last song/album you bought?
Royals by Lorde.
Favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
At Granny's house.
Favourite pair of shoes?
Sanuks - so comfy, a bit ratty, but definitely something I don't mind spilling paint on to add more character.
Your most recent favourite purchase?
A Soda Stream - instant soda in seconds, just add some lemon, YUM!
Edmonton has so many great restaurants, if you had to choose one as your favourite, what would it be?
I know you love Instagram as much as me, who are your top three favourite to follow?
@justbellablog for her simplistic elegant style (and Alice), @designhouseofmoira for her most perfect calligraphy and watercolour illustrations, @55his - an incredible illustrator
Best vacation spot?
A big thanks to Justine for allowing me to pick her brain! We get so many compliments on her beautiful work, I thought she was the perfect candidate for our "Designing Women" series.
