Designing Women - My Daughter Fragrances

Over here at Plum, we are all about women working it in the design industry, and these days, they are embodying every bit of that phrase - so much so that we thought it would be a great idea to feature these fabulous ladies on our blog!

Introducing "Designing Women," a weekly interview with women on the forefront of design, creativity, and all things beautiful

Today we are featuring Janey from My Daughter Fragrances. She has created a delightfully scented perfume that we are honoured to carry in our store. So without further ado, let's meet Janey!

From the name of your product, it's a safe guess to say that your daughter was your inspiration for starting this line, but can you give us a little background as to how it came about?

Yes! Absolutely she is the inspiration. I always knew I wanted to create a brand in the beauty industry, it just took me having a baby girl to take my own dreams seriously. Each fragrance I add to the line is kind of  a fragrant love letter, and I think as women those two words MY DAUGHTER are so powerful and loving at the same times.
I want Anna to have memories of me building a brand, being creative, working hard, and I may have road bumps along the way, but she will always keep me going!

Your fragrance is free from phthalates, parabens, and animal products. How important was it to you to create such an eco-friendly product?

For those who do not know what phthalates are, let me explain in "simple speak:" They are a plastic like solvent that the industry will add to perfumed products to help the scent "last" and also to cut ingredients. They are linked to hormone disruption along with parabens, which are a preservative.
My perfumer in France is known for being an ethical formulator, so when her and I collaborate there are certain ingredients we eliminate right from the start, such as polycyclic musks, colorants, etc...

What is your favourite essential oil at the moment? Why?

I really love pure Bulgarian Rose oil (it's very expensive!) I put it in the bath with epsom salts and it's to die for! It's very feminine and I find it calming and healing.

What was the last book you read that you loved?

One of my favourite books is "Pillars of the Earth," by Ken Follet. I was so sad when I was getting to the end of that book! I didn't want to leave all the characters behind.

What do you love about being an Alberta based company?

Being based in Alberta is such a blessing, we may have crappy weather, but we have a strong economy and we love to support anyone who is local. Being from the prairies will always be part of our story.

What is your favourite Canadian city? Why?

Oh I really love Victoria, probably because it's so different from home, they have the ocean air, it's green and lush.

Do you have new lines of fragrance coming out in the near future?

Yes my new fragrance is called "Always Loved" and should be ready to go early summer. MY DAUGHTER will eventually be a full fragrance line.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would love to take my family to Africa one day.

What is your all-time favourite movie?

The Notebook - you laugh, you cry, it's an epic love story.

If you could go to dinner with any three historical figures, who would they be and why?

Coco Chanel, Jesus, and Johnny Carson - can you imagine the conversation?

A big thanks to Janey to taking the time to answer our questions! We can't wait to smell "Always Loved"
