Designing Women - Autumn Grey Design

If you know anything about me, it is that I am obsessed with beautiful prints. They add so much personality to a room!

I am therefore so excited to introduce Learzi from Autumn Grey Designs. I came across her amazing work a couple of months ago, and it was love at first sight! So much so that I am thrilled to announce that we will soon be carrying her prints on our online store. Stay tuned!

Without further ado, let's meet Learzi, the woman behind the crafts.

Welcome Learzi! First off, your prints are so beautiful and detailed, have you always had a creative knack?

First thing’s first – thank you so much for letting me be a part of such an empowering and inspiring blog. It is definitely very humbling to be even considered in the same category of such amazing and hardworking Canadian women designers.

I have always been a person who is imaginative and find inspiration in everything I come across with. My mind never stops thinking! If ever I come across an idea, I somehow manage to put my creative twist to it and experiment with different mediums.

How did you specifically get into creating such amazing prints?

It all started when my husband asked me to create some custom prints for our families during the holiday season that just passed. He’s one amazing gift giver because he always “gives from the heart”. Our families loved the custom prints and encouraged me to open shop.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that my husband was getting me ready to “realize my passion” for handwriting. The rest was history!

Like I mentioned, your prints are all so detailed, it really adds to the quality of the print, and you mix materials so effortlessly! Which material do you like working with the most?

Thank you so much. I do like to experiment with different writing tools and it’s amazing what simple tools can do! I love using black cardstock and my sharpie blackboard pens as well as my gold sakura markers!

How has social media helped you get your prints to the public?

Social Media, particularly Instagram, has been an incredible source of marketing – through word of “pictures” (really! as opposed to mouth!). People have been very supportive of what we’ve been creating so far. We are so thankful for continuously loving our work and letting other people know about this little shop of ours.

Were you doing anything before you decided to do prints? If so, what was it? What made you seek out a change?

Haha, believe it or not, I was creating invitations with a friend from my previous life. However, it’s always a challenge to work with another person no matter how hard you both work. I found that no matter how well I worked with a partner, I always wished I had my own business doing my own thing. I always wondered what it would be like critiquing my own work and at the same time admiring my own accomplishments. Deciding to follow my heart and taking chances was one of the best decisions I’ve made!
After a busy day of work, what is your favourite way to relax?

Not all of you might know but I actually work full-time as a Junior Construction Project Manager (safety shoes, hard hat and all!) on top of being a full time mom and wife. After a busy day of work, slipping into my creative zone while creating prints for Autumn Grey Design is my favourite way to relax…(along with cuddling with my 2 ½ year old daughter and having a cup of coffee with my husband of course!)

Who are your favourite Canadian designers to follow on Instagram at the moment?

My favourite designers! There are too many amazingly talented Canadians on IG but to mention a few of my faves --- Justine Ma of @justinemadesign, Brenny Giovis of @paperfelt and my cousin Charisse Reyes of @pixelpaperhearts. These ladies are my favourites because not only are they good at what they do; they do it on top of being mommies too!

Canadian designers are really bringing it when it comes to creating beautiful things. What do you like most about being in that club?

It is very humbling to be even considered part of such an elite club! I find that being a Canadian designer; we are much more accommodating and compassionate. I also find that there is a certain degree of light-heartedness and high regard to friendship. It goes to show how Canadian designers are inspired by all things beautiful and kind which makes me a proud member of!

What is your inspiration for coming up with such relatable quotes for your prints? Can you tell us which one is your favourite?

My 2 ½ year old daughter is my “Creative Director”! She provides me with such imaginative ideas and cheerful designs. Her sweet soul and passion for joy provide me with such inspiration not only as a designer but also as a mom.

My husband is also my “partner in crime”. He’s the driving force to my “design from the heart” prints. He inspires me to always “Open my Heart and Let My Dreams In” (which is my favourite print!)

I am forever thankful for having these two throughout this creative journey of mine!

Finally, anything new and exciting projects you can give us a hint about?

I am constantly looking for ideas to making our shop better but at the same time not compromising its main purpose – to write and to touch people’s lives through handwritten prints. With that said, collaborating with other shops are in the works and hopefully our long term goal of getting into the “home design” aspect of print design will soon be a reality!
