As part of our launch, let's learn about the lady behind the talent: Lu Mascaro from Uppercase Press!

Welcome Lu! Let's get right into it. With the technology available to us, letterpress almost seems like a lost art. What makes you passionate about it and why do you think it is important?

I think what made me love letterpress is its combination of simplicity, complexity, and elegance. In my case, I love to play with different typefaces and see how each one of them print differently. I love simple colour compositions leaving the complexity for the textures that you get from the press.

Letterpress also gives me the opportunity to do something that I’ve always wanted to do, which is to encourage people to share some love, some good feelings and emotions. It makes my heart smile every time I print new personal stationery that will be the media to share love and support, business cards that will be used to open new doors, wedding invitations that will be the start of very happy celebrations, and so on. Loving letterpress is composed of a whole lot of things.

What inspired you to get into letterpress?

To be honest, it was the desire to share good things with the world around me. It also gives me a creative outlet. I need to express myself.
I worked in the corporate world for many years and I was a bit tired of the process. I needed a change. Letterpress was a logical step because it was in my family. My grandfather was a print maker in Italy for over 30 years, so I decided I wanted to give it a try, and now I don't think I can’t do anything else.

Uppercase Press is such a classic name, how did you come up with it?

I wanted something very simple, and something that had to do with what it is to work with a press. Uppercase still is a very common word in print shops, but it was even more in the past where everything was manually typeset.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I don’t draw much. That’s not my expertise, unfortunately... My thing is ‘words’. Words inspire me. I also get inspired by things that happen everyday in our lives. Feelings and everyday events, which are hard to put on words. And then I like to play around with different typefaces creating a nice composition. My cards are usually very simple, but very elegant.

How beautiful are these cards? Head over to our online store and place your order!
